Trails and Roads Open for the Season

Great news! The trails and roads are open for the season, well most of them. There are a few on the North side of I-70 that have a June 30 opening date but the majority are now open. This includes the Basalt to Gypsum Trail System, June Creek, Metcalf Creek and more. WTC encourages you to get out there and enjoy while keeping these simple tips in mind:

  • Don’t feed, approach or harass wildlife.

  • Give wildlife distance when you see them on the trail - at least 100 yards!

  • If an animal changes it’s behavior, looks at you, gets up, walks, flies or runs away, you’re too close. Back away.

  • Always give the animal an escape route.

  • Leave young wildlife alone.

  • If you see sick or injured wildlife, call CPW.

  • Practice “Leave No Trace” ethics - pack it in, pack it out and leave the area better than you found it.

The Town of Avon OHV Ordinance is in effect as of tomorrow, June 24. If you live in Wildridge and need more details, please see the Avon Police website.

Interested in FS Rd 779, Metcalf Creek Road? The Avon Town Council is working with the Forest Service to maintain status quo and discussing a maintenance agreement. The history of FS Rd 779 and an overview of the June 10 meeting can be found in the Vail Daily.

Finally, WTC is looking for Motorized Trail Ambassadors for the Basalt to Gypsum Trail System. If you’re interested, please email me at devon@wildridgetrailcoalition.org.

Thank you for your support!
